Optics Suggestion for 5.56 IC A5

Postby Adam1122 » Wed Jan 04, 2017 2:49 am

Hi folks,

I'm picking up a new IC A5 pretty quick. I'm torn between them sheer number of optics choices that are available.

Couple things to consider. I plan on shooting this gun suppressed most of the time at targets anywhere from 25m to 600m.

I've considered a TRIJICON Acog 4x32, a Sig Sauer Tango 6 1-6x-24mm, Primary arms 1-8x-28 with ACCS reticle. What do you folks suggest that I go with? Keep in mind I could go with a regular scope and then mount a red dot in a 1 o'clock offset. The adjustable scopes with 6x/8x power have a lot of appeal to me.

Help is appreciated.

Budget? FFP? SFP? If it was me I would just go for the Kahles( pronounced; call us) 1x6 http://www.sportoptics.com/kahles-k16i- ... copes.aspx

Honestly, I'd put a T-1/H-1 on it and keep it light (and relatively inexpensive) unless you're going to be shooting prone or on a bench a lot. Shouldering a rifle with a powered optic gets old pretty fast. 600m is reaching a little with 5.56x45.

That said, if your plan is to have a powered optic and an offset reflex sight then why bother with 1x on the optic? Having 2.5x or even 3x as your lowest mag will allow higher power max. I have a Nightforce 2.5-10x on a Six8 SPR and I like it a lot. I find that I can still engage closer targets with both eyes open using 2.5x. If your budget won't accommodate NF level glass Vortex makes great products with a smaller price tag.

I put a Vortex Strike Eagle 1x6 on a 16" Six8 and so far so good, especially for the price.

I also put some offset sights on it just in case. Not a bad set up for a DMR rifle.

If you plan of shooting a lot of offhand and close quarters I would stick with a red dot like a T-1 or MRO.

Hey Adam1112, congrats on owning an A5 - what many consider to be the finest AR out there. Concerning your optics questions, I'm not saying you can't hit a target at 600m, but I gotta agree with Elvis and question the effectiveness of a 5.56 round at that distance. Having a 1x4 or 1x6 optic can be a great choice for a 5.56 AR type rifle since it aids in target identification and accuracy at the longer ranges. I used to run a Trijicon Accupoint 1x4 on mine, but ever since LWRC sent me a free Aimpoint T-1 (thanks, L-Dub :D) I can't seem to want to take that sweet RDS off my A5. So light, so easy to point, no cheek weld to worry about, just place the dot on target and fire away. Bottom line is if you look to any one solution to work in all situations, there will be trade-offs. Give a good hard look to what the "mission" of your A5 is going to be, and that should clarify your path.

I have 1 of 500 M6ICs edition. I put a Leupold MK6 1-6 on it. As others have mentioned, figure out the primary mission of this rifle. 5.56 is accurate to about 500m max before you have serious drop off. Can 5.56 be shot out to 600m, yes, effectively & accurately, no unless you have the capability to do so.

I've been fully satisfied with Trijicons and Primary Arms optics. Can't really go wrong with either, depending on your budget.

The only downside I can see with a Comp4 would be weight when compared to say a T1/H1 (or 2's). This is a very minor difference. My old favorite rifle still wears a Comp M3.

We are talking 1X RDS which works fine for me, YMMV.
I'll just sit here quietly and play with my new rail panels...........

Thanks for the input folks. I plan on shooting his as my everyday "all purpose" rifle. Most likely, I will rarely shoot past 400 but I want the ability to go past 500 if I have to. I know it's a lot to ask of a single optic that's why I'm thinking a variable would be best. Most targets will be between 50-250 so a BDC reticle would be great so I can just shoot using holdovers

I've though about the vortex strike fire in 1-6 and the primary arms with accss reticle in 1-8x. Since I went all out on the rifle the last thing I want to do is cheat the rifle by putting some unworth glass on it.

That being said....what do you guys think about a 4x32 ACOG or even the huge 6x48 (and massively $$).
If I went with an Acog I'd out a pair of simple offset irons off the rail and remove the skirmish Sights.

Opinions are welcomed! Rifle gets here on Monday and I can't wait!!! It's going to tool good next to my 20" REPR.

If anyone has had a bad experience with the Vortex 1-6x please please let me know.....glass quality etc.

Thanks!!

I have 4x32 ACOGs on two of my rifles, the longer ones. My shorty and AK get a PA micro. At least for me, the ACOGs have spoiled me for anything else. You pay dearly for them, but they are really nice. I don't see the need for a 6x unless you are talking .308. JM2CW.

I have one of these on a BCM 16" gun. It is high quality but pricey and heavy. It is as tough and simple as an ACOG with variable power, the 1X is almost as good as a red dot. If you want to stay high end here you go.

Yeah the VCOG is my top pick but man it's super pricey. Buy once cry once I guess. I'll let you guys know what I end up with....can't friggin wait for my rifle to get here. Already have a Magpul D60 for it (never know when you might need 60 rounds right?).

If I can't find a good deal on the VCOG somewhere I'll probably go Acog 4x32 and mount a red dot in a one o'clock offset and skip the backup irons. Might as well go all out right? Everyone needs just one rifle that's completely over the top.

Dude...unless you're a WWE wrestler I bet you a dollar you lighten up that rifle in short order.
