Bolt not reaching battery consistently

Postby rayfinckle@gmail.com » Sat Jun 25, 2016 3:00 am

I'm a new REPR 20" spiral owner. Put about 200 rounds down range in 20 round increments and clean between each session. I figured by now she is broken in and tried 50 round session last night. I'm in CA so using 10 round mags. After the third mag I could not get the bolt to go into battery with a fresh mag.....and the forward assist didn't help. Had to pull charge handle to eject round then slam it shut....had to slam it shut HARD just to reach battery but then she fired the rest of mag no problem. Does this seem normal? Is she just not broken in yet?

What ammo are you using? Did it happen just the one time? Are you using more than one mag? If you can replicate the conditions, see if it happens again.

Probably the magazine. Did it do the same with other magazines?

Also try backing the mags down a round. New mag springs put a lot of upward pressure on the top round when they are jam packed full. Try 9 rounds. I run 29 on my 30 round Pmags and have had zero issues since I started backing the rounds down by one. In fact I do that with all my mags, pistol and rifle. Run the rifle wet as well. Did you ride the CH by chance?

Thanks for the advice everyone. To answer a couple questions:

Ammo: Austrian mil surplus, 146grain. Using this just to break her in. I've got a bunch of match grade 165grain for when I get glass.

Magazines: The battery failure happens with any of my 8 magazines.

I went to range today and tried the recommended 9 round loads. Still having same problem, reaches battery for the first few magazines but then fails to reach battery once warmed up.

I guess I'll just keep putting rounds through it until broken in. Thanks again for the suggestions.

You need to send it back, there is no break in period with these rifles. Call customer service, they are easy to work with and usually fast in their turn around.

Sorry man, I should have clarified my statement. I was thinking of the barrel break in period which can be 100- 300 rounds. Brain fart on my part. RC is right, call CS.

Try some good quality ammo, Pick up a box of Federal gold medal match. If you have a case gauge and check head space, L E Wilson etc. drop a couple rounds of that Austrian mil surplus inside to check it and you may see its out of spec. When the cases are not properly sized, the problem with the bolt not closing will happen every time. It does not make a difference if it is a semi or bolt. A REPR'S chamber is precisely cut!!!!!

Try different ammo to see if it is actually a problem with the rifle. Good luck!!
